Too Advanced

Tonight AP was evaluated by our state's early intervention services for speech therapy. If you have been around AP at all, then you know that she talks a lot, but you can only understand about 20% of it. We use context clues a lot at our house to figure out what she is saying and it really frustrates her at times. I can understand her much more than anyone else, but there are still a lot of times that I am clueless. But, as the title indicates, she's just too smart to qualify :) She had to be 25% behind in 2 or more areas or 40% behind in one area. She was way ahead of the game in every area! Basically, they don't consider articulation an issue until she is three. The therapist that came to our house said that she thinks she will definitely qualify at that time and she even identified the specific speech problem that she has. So we will go on guessing what she is saying until then...

It looks like they would go ahead and start with the therapy. If they know she is going to need it at 3 why not start it now?

Do you not want to climb through a wall with logic like this? Yes, she has a problem, we know it, but it's too soon to do anything about it? Uh ... early intervention? UGH!!!!

I just had Alex tested (again...the first time was right after we came home) this time by the school district since he IS three. Nope, didn't qualify. She said she could understand 70-75% of what he was saying and he was really right on track. While he HAS made amazing strides the last several months, his preschool teacher (who has a degree in Speech Pathology) was a little surprised. Basically we were told he just needs to slow down. We'll see...his problem is also articulation.
